 The 420 Truth

Where 420 was born...

Puff and Du

Out of the 250,000,000+ Google Search results, there are four not listed, and they are the only ones that matter. Who, When, Where, and How?

The first mention of 420 occurred squarely at 4:20 pm on the Saturday afternoon of October 24th of 1970, during a round of bong loads in San Rafael, California. Bradley Bann aka The Beeb first uttered the term in the bedroom of Puff and Du, at their home on Riviera Drive in a neighborhood called Peacock Gap. The two brothers witnessed the precise moment in which Beeb invented a secret code for pot use around parents and friends.

420 was only designated as a time of day only at its inception, and a few other times after that. Like so many Pop Culture anomalies, 420 occurred completely by accident. The term stuck because 420 sounded "Stoner Poetic". Like many names and terms from The Beeb (Bradley Bann) lexicon, the code was shared first around the neighborhood, then at school, until it eventually worked its way out of town, then out of Marin County, then into the Grateful Dead community, then to colleges and universities where students who grew up in San Rafael later attended. Places like spreading 420. There's even a story where 420 made it all way up to the frozen Arctic Sea at Prudhoe Bay, Alaska, College of Marin, San Diego State, Chico State, UC Berkeley, UCLA, and several other institutions on the West Coast played a vital role in 420's growth in Pop Culture.

When asked his thoughts on how the number has blossomed into a global phenomenon, Beeb said, "Hard to fathom, really. When I first said 420 when we were doing bong loads at exactly 4:20 in Puff and Du’s house, it was completely spontaneous. I suppose in some weird way, 420 just sounded kinda cool to me, and it immediately stuck with us. We started using the code in front of parents and term in front of non-420 people. To see how it left our neighborhood becoming this hugely popular number, used around the world by Gomes, Bonfiglios, and people everywhere blows me away and lends proof we’re all living in an infant’s mind... And if I were to add one other thought, one thing, it is... Get ready, it’s a “Wiggly World” out there and we’re all just passing through."
